Athletes of the Week
Yannis Gianniotis
Men's Soccer
Co-captain and 2009 CIS all-Canadian Yannis Gianniotis scored two goals as the No. 4 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team kicked off their 2010 regular-season campaign and went undefeated on the road this weekend.

Despite less than ideal playing conditions, the fifth-year defender battled through the weather and came through in a clutch, scoring Toronto’s lone goal to even the score in the final minutes of the game versus the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday.

On Sunday afternoon, Gianniotis added an insurance marker on a penalty kick in a 2-0 victory over Laurentian. The Master’s of teaching student faked out Voyaguers goalkeeper Matt George and smoothly sent the ball into the right side of the net.

Kate Crowley
Women's Soccer
Four-time OUA all-star Kate Crowley made an immediate impact in her first two games for the Blue and White, scoring one goal and adding one assist as the No. 5 Varsity Blues women’s soccer team opened the 2010 regular season on the road this weekend.

Crowley, a fifth-year Western Mustangs transfer, scored what would be the game-winner in a 4-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Sunday afternoon. The London, Ont., native opened the scoring in the 15th minute after following in a loose ball and finding a hole through a scramble in front of the net. Crowley followed that up with a beautiful assist in the second half, sending a perfectly-placed cross to teammate Juliana Bergin, who headed it into the back of the net.

A fifth-year nursing student, Crowley opened the weekend and set the pace for the Blues who had to deal with less than ideal weather conditions. She battled hard in the midfield to create a lot of dangerous scoring opportunities on Saturday as Toronto held on to preserve the tie.
