MEN'S TENNIS 2008 YEAR IN REVIEW

After finishing out of playoff contention in 2007, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s tennis team finished the regular season tied with the McMaster Marauders for second place with a 4-2 record and went onto upset the number one ranked York Lions to claim the OUA championship.

The Blues handily defeated the Marauders 6-1 in semi-final action and were set to face the defending champions York Lions in the OUA final – a Lions team that had defeated the Blues 7-0 in the opening match of the season.

Rob Schmidt led the way with a win in his doubles match as well as in singles play. Number two Schmidt partnered with Cameron Starratt to beat Lions number two doubles team of Stan Faynberg and Anthony Rakic, 8-2.

Schmidt also took on the Lions number two, Tomo Ono, and beat him 6-2, 6-3.

The Varsity Blues number three, four and five tennis players; Rowan Thompson, Aamer Javed and Starratt also picked up wins, defeating their respective opponents.

The Blues came away with a 5-2 victory over the favoured Lions to claim their 33rd OUA title since 1909.

Head coach Nabil Tadros was named both the men’s and women’s OUA coach of the year and Schmidt was recognized as an OUA all-star for his stellar play this season.
