The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s wrestling team placed third, while the men finished fourth at the 2009 Toronto Open on Sunday, October 18 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The Blues garnered four individual medals on the day. Leading the way for U of T were gold-medal performances by Shujon Mazumder (Toronto) in the men’s 54kg category and Dene Ringette in the men’s 76kg event.
“It was a great start to the season for us,” said head coach Michael Quinsey. “I was pleased with how many of our wrestlers performed on the mat and was especially happy to see Shujon and Dene garner such successful performances as a result of their continued hard work.”
Also reaching the podium were Melissa Biscardi, with a second-place finish in the women’s 48kg, and Jennifer Seidel (Ajax, Ont.), who earned a bronze medal in the women’s 63kg category.
Fifth-year veteran Matt Fruchtman (Toronto) placed fourth in the men’s 90kg, while Bojan Kladnjakovic (Brampton, Ont.) and John Feng (Scarborough, Ont.) both finished fifth in the men’s 61kg and 68kg events, respectively.

Toronto’s women’s team placed third with and overall team score of 12 points. The Western Mustangs took the title with an impressive 35 points, while Impact placed second with 15 points.
The Blues men’s team finished the day in fourth place with 27 points. Impact and YM-YWHA tied for first with 42 points apiece, while McMaster earned the bronze medal with 36 points.
The Varsity Blues return to the mats on Saturday, October 31 when they head to Hamilton, Ont. for the McMaster Invitational.
