I realize this is several weeks late. I had this all typed up and just let it sit there since January. If you’re interested what I was thinking on the week of the 26th, here’s what I had:
Ouch! Last weekend was pretty rough. Two losses after just annihilating all comers in the first half of the game kinda smarts a bit. Let me tell ya, the first two sets against Western in London on Friday night were a beautiful sight, if you’re a Varsity Blues fan. We could do no wrong. Western was ranked nationally earlier in the season, is the third-place team in the province, and has just come off a win against McMaster. We took ‘em out behind the woodshed for the first half, but then we collapsed. I think that is what is so frustrating for everybody. We see what we can do, but we just aren’t doing it. Why? That is a good question.
What else is so frustrating, is that we had a great week of practice, and the week before that was good too. The last session we had before the weekend had the whole team optimistic with regards to the weekend. If you could have seen the energy in the sports gym it would have looked like Flubber (90’s Robin Williams flick). Our play is on the upswing and it is failing to materialize. It’s driving everyone nuts. There has been no shortage of discussion on the topic, either.
The Western Mustangs, what a group of boys that is. They have NO class. I know chirping happens, people do it in the heat of the game, they’re amped up, and they express it. These boys at Western are a completely different story. They do it loud, and from the bench. Their intent, target, and motivation are one hundred percent clear. The whole “theatre” can hear them (Western’s gym is designed like an amphitheatre). I guess not just the guys on the court want to put on a show. The stuff they do crosses the line of respect and sportsmanship. I realize this seems more than a little bit subjective, with the recent heartbreaking loss and whatnot. I stick to my point nevertheless. I would be embarrassed to be a part of such actions.
We’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks. Playoffs loom higher and higher on the horizon, so let’s hope they don’t get too high. Still mathematically alive, we gotta heat up here soon. Four matches to go and they sure ain’t easy wins. Gotta stay positive, go Blues!
