BASEBALL 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

After starting the season 3-7, the 2009 University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team went 7-2 over their last nine games of the season to clinch a playoff berth and reach the OUA semifinals for the first time since 2006.

The Blues finished the season tied with the Brock Badgers with identical 9-9 records and won the tiebreaker on account of a better head-to-head record.

The highlight of the regular season came when fifth-year pitcher Jake Gallo threw a complete game no-hitter, leading the Varsity Blues to a 5-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Toronto native faced 22 batters in seven innings, allowing no runs and was one walk shy of a perfect game.

The Blues unfortunately dropped the best-of-three semifinal series to the eventual OUA champion Western Mustangs, falling 4-2 in game one and 5-1 in game two.

Tyler Wilson became the third consecutive Varsity Blue to be named the OUA most valuable pitcher after recording a solid 1.86 ERA in an impressive 53 innings this season, allowing only 13 runs on 47 hits during regular season play.

Four other Varsity Blues were recognized as OUA all-stars. Third-year shortstop David Fallico, third-baseman Chris Dahiroc and outfielder Pat Janssen were all named first team all-stars, while outfielder Jamie Lekas earned an OUA second team nod.
