The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team completed the 2009 OUA regular season with a stellar 12-0 record.
The Blues dominated in all aspects, scoring a league-high 172 goals and allowing the second fewest goals against (85) in 12 games.
Toronto finished 1,2 and 3 in the OUA scoring race as Jennifer Held tallied 63 points, while both Yoko Murphy and Taryn Greider had 53 in regular season action. Senior midfielder Tory Merrill also posted impressive numbers with 37 points to finished seventh in the conference.
The Blues also took home four of five major awards. Murphy earned OUA most valuable offensive player honours, while third-year standout Jeska Eedens garnered the most valuable defensive player award. Held was named the OUA most sportsmanlike player and Todd Pepper was recognized as the coach of the year for the second time in three years and fifth time in his career.
Unfortunately, the Blues dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 decision to the defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks in a windy OUA semi-final affair to spoil their hopes of a perfect season. Toronto went on to handily defeat the Queen’s Gaels 16-10 to earn the OUA bronze medal for the seventh consecutive season.
