SCHUTZ NAMED MVP, BLUES WIN REDBIRD CLASSIC

Nicki Schutz totalled 60 points and 32 rebounds as the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team went 3-0 to win the 2010 McGill Redbird Classic tournament, October 22-24, in Montreal.

The Blues opened the tournament with a commanding 76-41 victory over the Waterloo Warriors and went on to defeat the host McGill Martlets 64-52 on Saturday night. U of T rounded out the tournament win with an 88-61 win over the UPEI Panthers on Sunday morning.

Schutz was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while fourth-year guard Joanna Medri of Toronto was named an all-star for her 26-point performance over the three-day event.

The Blues dominated versus the Warriors as they built a lead and never looked back. Schutz tallied a game-high 20 points and nine boards, while Medri and fellow guard Erin McNeely of Kingston, Ont., had nine and 10 points, respectively.

Schutz proved to be the difference in Toronto’s closest game of the tournament. The Toronto native had a monster performance with 31 points and 18 boards to lead the Blues to a 12-point advantage over the Martlets. Medri, McNeely and rookie and Montreal native Lianne Bailey chipped in with seven points apiece in the win.

Four Varsity Blues posted double digits in their final game versus UPEI. Fourth-year guard Sherri Pierce of Brampton, Ont., recorded a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while rookie forward Jill Stratton had 12 points. McNeely and Medri each recorded 10 to round out the victory.

The Varsity Blues open their 2010-11 regular season next Saturday, October 30 as they travel down Bloor St. to take on the Ryerson Rams. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
