The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball team defeated the McGill Redmen 84-72 on Saturday, October 30 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Forwards Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) and Ben Garvin (Holland Landing, Ont.) led the Blues with 17 points apiece, while Burnaby, B.C., native Andrew Wasik had 15 and a team-high seven boards. Arun Kumar of Hamilton, Ont., chipped in with 11 points and Toronto native Alex Hill had 10 in the victory.
McGill was led by Simon Bibeau’s (St. Burno, Que.) game-high 24 points. Golden, B.C., native Nicolas Langley tallied 14 points and nine rebounds and Greg Gause of Williston, Vermont contributed 10 in the loss.
The Redmen got off to a good start and built a 24-15 advantage after the first quarter. Luckily for the Blues, Kumar came off the bench at the beginning of the second and drained back-to-back three-pointers only to be followed by rookie Matt Savel. Just like that, Toronto was back in the game and went on to take a five-point lead (39-34) at half time.
The Redmen kept things close throughout the third; however, the Blues padded their lead for good with 21 fourth-quarter points to earn their fourth consecutive preseason win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, November 5 when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves in their 2010-11 home opener at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
