The Varsity Blues men's water polo team claimed their sixth title in the past seven years with a 17-11 victory over the Western Mustangs in the OUA championship final on Sunday, November 28 in Kingston, Ont.
The heavily-favoured Varsity Blues gave the surprising Western Mustangs little opportunity to pull off another upset after Western shocked Carleton in the semifinals.
From the opening whistle, tournament MVP Alan Chung of Ajax, Ont., put on a show for the Varsity Blues fans, scoring three times in the opening half to stake Toronto to a 9-5 lead.
In the third quarter, Chung continued to shine, adding three more goals as the Varsity Blues cruised to an easy 17-11 win. Tournament all-star Luke Spooner of Auckland, NZ, scored three times in the championship match for Toronto as did Milos Radojcic of Belgrade, SRB.
The Blues dominated the entire weekend, opening the tournament with a 19-2 victory over the York Lions before downing the Queen’s Gaels 23-0 in other round robin action. Toronto defeated the McMaster Marauders 15-5 in the semifinals earlier on Sunday to advance to the gold-medal match.
