BLUES FENCE THEIR WAY TO SILVER AND BRONZE AT OUA CHAMPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s fencing team won a silver medal, while the women’s team was awarded bronze at the 2010 OUA Championships, which took place at Carleton University, February 13-14.

On the men’s side, the host Ravens defeated the defending OUA champions by the smallest of margins - one point (194 -193).

Toronto excelled in the foil event, finishing first overall. The top Varsity Blues were Kamil Karbonowski of Milton, Ont. and Kyle Chan (Hong Kong), who won silver and bronze respectively.

Toronto managed fourth place finishes in both the sabre and épée competitions.

Gordon Geringas was the top Blues performer in the sabre, as the Toronto native racked up 19 points with a bronze-medal performance. Felix Pang of Markham, Ontario was the top competitor for his team in the épée event, finishing in fifth place with 12 points.

On the women’s side, the Blues took home a bronze medal in the overall team standings, finishing with 199 points.

Kelly Doyle (Troy, N.Y.) led Toronto to a first-place finish in the sabre event with a silver medal performance, adding 25 points to the team total. Burlington, Ont. native Kristina Han wasn’t far behind, finishing fourth in the competition, giving her squad an additional13 points.

Jodi Marr was also a top performer for the Blues, finishing with a bronze medal in the foil competition. The Wainfleet, Ontario native picked up 19 points and pushed her team to a third-place finish in the event.

Toronto also placed second in the épée event, thanks in large part to a couple of strong finishes by Joanne Ko (Toronto) and Scarborough Ont. native Amber Wavryk.
