VARSITY BLUES ALUMNA MOYSE CAPTURES OLYMPIC GOLD

FORMER BLUES HOCKEY STAR HEFFORD GOES FOR HER THIRD GOLD TONIGHT

WHISTLER, B.C. - University of Toronto alumna Heather Moyse of Summerside P.E.I, along with teammate Kaillie Humphries, captured an Olympic gold medal in women's bobsleigh on Wednesday night.

It is the first gold medal for Canada in women’s bobsleigh since the event made its debut in the Salt Lake City Games in 2002. Moyse’s Canada 1 sled won the event in a combined time of 3:32.28, 0.85 of a second ahead of the Canada 2 sled driven by Helen Upperton and University of Toronto Track Club (UTTC) alumna Shelley-Ann Brown.

Moyse attended the U of T in 2004-05, completing a Master’s degree in occupational therapy. After four years at the University of Waterloo, Moyse competed in her fifth and final year of eligibility at Toronto where she led the Varsity Blues rugby team to a silver medal at both the OUA and CIS championships. She garnered first team all-star and all-Canadian recognition as well as a CIS tournament all-star nod.

A current member of the national rugby program, Moyse was also a gifted track and field star at university. In 2004, she finished second at the conference championships in the 60m and was a member of the Blues gold-medal winning 4x200m relay team. She finished fifth and second in those events at the CIS national championships that same year.

Brown was a member of our UTTC’s junior development program for six years, won numerous OFSAA and national championship medals in the 100m, sprint hurdles and relay before becoming an all-American at the University of Nebraska.

Former Varsity Blues ice hockey star Jayna Hefford will be going for gold as Canada takes on the USA in the women’s hockey finale tonight. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. EST.

An OUA (then OWIAA) all-star in 1996-97, Hefford is a co-captain on this year’s team that looks to claim its third consecutive Olympic gold medal (Salt Lake City, 2002; Turino, 2006) after a silver-medal performance in Nagano, Japan where women’s hockey made its debut.
