VANCOUVER – Former University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey player Jayna Hefford helped lead Canada to a 2-0 win over the United States in the highly-anticipated showdown at Canada Hockey Place on Thursday night.
This is the third consecutive Olympic gold medal and fourth overall for the Team Canada forward and team co-captain. It was also Canada’s first medal performance of any kind for a hockey team on home soil.
She joins former U of T student-athlete Heather Moyse, who along with teammate Kaillie Humphries, won a gold medal in women's two-man bobsleigh on Wednesday.
An OUA (then OWIAA) all-star in 1996-97, Hefford was also named the rookie of the year and was the league’s top scorer while a member of the Blues that season.
The native of Kingston, Ont. is also six-time world champion – 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2007. In 1999 and 2000, Hefford was Team Canada’s leading scorer.
