RUSSELL BREAKS 3 OUA RECORDS, BLUES STILL TOPS AT OUA CHAMPS

Colin Russell of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues broke three OUA records on day two and three (Feb. 5-6) of the 2010 OUA swimming championships hosted by Brock University at the Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre.

The 2008 Olympian was part of two record swims on day two, first setting a new standard in the men's 200m freestyle in a time of 1:47.23. The Burlington, Ont. native then anchored the men's 4x100m medley relay. Russell as well as Cam Cummings (Oakville, Ont.), Stevan Kalaba (Toronto), and Zack Chetrat (Oakville, Ont.) won in an OUA-record time of 3:44.81.

Russell set yet another record on day three, winning the men's 100m freestyle in a time of 49.17. It was a Toronto sweep of the podium as Martyn Forde (Barbados) and Taylor Bond (Westmount, Que.) earned the silver and bronze. Blues swimmers Steven Hibberd (Calgary, Alta.), Luke Hall (Swaziland, AFR) and Andy Townsend (Toronto) finished 4,5,6 in the race as Toronto achieved a rare feat in swimming history.
"In my 30+ years as a coach and as an athlete, before today I have never seen a team that has been able to pull that off," said head coach Byron MacDonald.

The Blues men also swept the podium in the men’s 100m butterfly. Chetrat topped all competitors with a time of 55.44, while Mike Smerek (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Townsend won silver and bronze, respectively.

Toronto’s foursome of Bond, Townsend, Chetrat and Curtis Samuel (Oakville, Ont.) won the men's 4x200m freestyle relay in a time of 8:13.47.

Other top male performances included Chetrat’s silver- and Samuel’s bronze-medal performances in the men’s 400m freestyle, as well as Cummings’ second-place finish in the men’s 100m backstroke. Veteran Marco Monaco of Oakville, Ont. also earned the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:16.22.

In women’s action, Heather Maitland (Toronto) dethroned defending champion Brittany Cooper of the Mustangs in the women’s 400m, winning in a time of 4:14.37. Cooper took silver, while Maitland's teammate, Pamela ‘Poppy’ Ruksys (Kingston, Ont.), earned the bronze.

Veteran swimmer Sasha Theron was just shy of a gold medal in the 100m butterfly, finishing 5-100ths of a second behind Guelph’s Chantique Payne. The Mississauga, Ont. native also placed second in the women’s 100m freestyle in a time of 56.51 seconds.

Rounding out Toronto’s top female performances was sophomore Andrea Jurenovskis (Timmins, Ont.) with a silver-medal finish in the women’s 100m backstroke.

The OUA swimming championships conclude on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
