BLUES COMPETE AT CANADIAN INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Members of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues rowing team competed at the Canadian indoor rowing championships this weekend (Feb. 6-7) at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

Fourth-year life science major Michael Harowicz of Oakville, Ont. led the way for the Blues, winning the open men's event in a time of 6:06.6.

The 2009 OUA women’s double champion, Elise Mackie (Calgary, Alta.) earned the silver medal in the senior B women's event ( 7:14.6), second only to national team member Sarah Black of the Western Mustangs. Lindsay Tetreault (Oakville, Ont.) finished fifth in the same event.

Calgary, Alta. native Alanna Komisar rounded out Toronto’s top individual performances with a fifth-place finish in the senior B lightweight women's event ( 7:45.8).

The U of T women successfully defended their 2009 title by once again taking the gold medal in the team event. Team members included Mackie, Komisar, Hyojin (Jin) Jeon, Caro Kronlachner (Toronto), Kalyna Kardash (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Lauren Brown (Toronto), Kate and Jen Sauks (Owen Sound, Ont.).

Several other UofT rowers put in strong performances including several novice men from the 2009 season, who raced at their first ever indoor competition.
