SCHUTZ TALLIES GAME-HIGH 18 POINTS IN OUA ALL-STAR GAME

University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball player Nicki Schutz tallied 21 points as the West narrowly defeated the East 68-63 in the second annual OUA all-star game on Saturday, May 1 hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University.

Named a 2009-10 OUA first team all-star and CIS second team all-Canadian, Schutz led all players in scoring for the second consecutive year. Despite the loss, the Toronto native tallied 18 points and five rebounds to follow up her game-high 21 points in 2009. She was also named the OUA East player of the game.

Schutz led the CIS with 11 rebounds per game and was third in the OUA with 17.95 points per game this season. She recorded 14 doubles-doubles this season, including 11 in the last 12 games. With 21 points and 10 boards, Schutz also helped lead the team in an upset of the third-place Queen’s Gaels in OUA East quarter-final action.

The West opened an early lead but the East kept it close until the final minuets of the first quarter. At the end of the quarter, the West held a 20-15 lead.

The East scored the first six points of the second quarter to gain a narrow 21-20 advatange, however the West regained the lead and led by as much as 10 points at a time.
The West regrouped and led 41-32 on a buzzer beater at the half. The West shot 52% in the half, compared to 34% for the East. The East led on rebounds, 16-13.

The second half started with it appearing that West would pull away, as they built up a 12 point lead. However, the East cut into the lead, cutting it from double to single digits. The West's lead shrank until it disappeared completely with 10 seconds left in the third quarter, when the East tied the score at 51-51. A late basket by West made the score 53-51 at the buzzer.

The final quarter was very exciting as the lead traded hands with nearly every basket. While there was not much scoring, the players put on a very fast game. The score was tied 55-55 at 8:03 and 57-57 at 5:59. At 4:10 Amanda Anderson (University of Western Ontario) scored a three that gave the West a lead they would hold until the end of the game. The East narrowed the game at 65-63 at 2:13 but had to foul to stop the clock. West got points on all its trips to the line and forced a turnover in the dying seconds to secure a 68-63 win.

Again West shot very well, 45% compared to 35% and had an edge on rebounds 15-12. The East struggled from the free throw line in the second half, shooting 6 for 12.
