Eight members of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team have been selected to participate in the fourth annual Ontario University Athletics (OUA) all-star showcase on Sunday, May 30 following the Toronto Blue Jays game at Rogers Centre.
The OUA all-star team is comprised of student-athletes from six schools that complete on the OUA circuit, including Laurier, Toronto, Brock, Guelph, McMaster and Waterloo and will take to the field against the 2009 OUA champion Western Mustangs.
The Blues have six athletes set to compete, the highest representation of any school on the OUA roster. Chris Dahiroc of Ajax, Ont. and Toronto natives Jamie Lekas and David Fallico will make their third consecutive appearance at the showcase, while veteran pitcher Jake Gallo (Toronto) will take to the mound for the second time in four years. They will be joined by teammates and showcase newcomers Pat Janssen (Toronto) and 2009 OUA pitcher of the year Tyler Wilson of Port Hope, Ont.
2010 U of T Sports Hall of Fame inductee and Varsity Blues head coach Dan Lang has been appointed the OUA all-star’s bench boss for the first time in his illustrious career, while Toronto’s Frank Manzo will serve as the team’s trainer.
The all-star team tied the then champion Western Mustangs 5-5 in the inaugural all-star showcase in 2007, lost a close battle, 7-5, to the Mustangs in 2008 before handily defeating the McMaster Marauders 8-2 in 2009.
The OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase will take place following the Toronto Blue Jays game against the Baltimore Orioles, which begins at 1:07 p.m. The OUA All-Star Showcase is made possible with the help of KR3, Wilson, Pizza Pizza and the Blue Jays.
