LANG INDUCTED INTO U OF T SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Varsity Blues head baseball coach Dan Lang was inducted as a builder into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 27 at Hart House Theatre.

In his 13 seasons as the head coach of the Varsity Blues baseball team, Lang has had a lasting impression on University of Toronto intercollegiate athletics and their role in the community.

Lang was twice named OUA coach of the year (2004, 2006). Lang, who retires in 2010, will be Toronto’s longest standing head baseball coach. He has produced more than 20 league all-stars during his tenure. Under his guidance, the Varsity Blues won two OUA championships, two OUA silver medals and earned two Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) silver medals (1999 and 2000) and four CIABA East division championship titles.

Through successful fundraising, Lang shepherded the project for the Varsity Blues permanent baseball facility at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. In 2004, he began a free clinic program for Toronto Parks and Recreation as well as the North Toronto Baseball Association.

In 2007, Lang organized the inaugural Varsity Blues high school classic, now an annual tournament for GTA secondary schools.

The Sports Hall of Fame honours U of T's greatest athletes and builders. It was established by the T-Holders' Association in 1987 as part of an ongoing effort to preserve and display the records relating to the outstanding historical tradition of athletic, academic and community leadership fostered by the University of Toronto.
