Several members of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team head east this weekend to compete at the 2010 World Junior Trials, July 2-4, in Moncton, N.B.
All winners will earn an automatic berth on the 2010 World Junior championships team.
The Varsity Blues have four second-year athletes representing the University of Toronto Track Club (UTTC) in Moncton: Zac Tars (Bracebridge, Ont.) in the 800m, Oakville, Ont., native Mike Trnkus in both the 200m and 400m, Jake Woloshyn of Scarborough, Ont., in the 5000m as well as Alana Stewart (Etobicoke, Ont.) in the long and triple jumps.
Three top Varsity Blues recruits will also be representing UTTC this weekend. Colleen Hennessy is set to compete in both the 1500m and 3000m and Shannon Kennedy will vie for the top spot in the 800m. Rachel Jewett, sister of Varsity Blues cross country standout Tamara Jewett, will also try her luck both on the track in the 400m hurdles and in the field in the high jump competition.
In addition, Varsity Blues pole vaulter Townsend Benard (St. Catharines, Ont.) will be representing Runners Edge Track Club, while Matthew Daly-Grafstein will compete in the 110m hurdles as a member of his hometown Vancouver Thunderbirds. Aurora, Ont., native Alex Denault is set to run the 1500m for the Newmarket Huskies, while Katie Housely (Burlington, Ont.) is signed up for the 800m and 1500m for Phoenix Athletics.
A number of UTTC junior development athletes will also be competing this weekend, including Daniel Chan in the 400m hurdles and middle distance up-and-comer Liz Whelan in the 800m and 1500m.
