Mike Trnkus of the Varsity Blues track and field team has been named a member of the team that will represent Canada at the 2010 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) world junior championships based on his results at the Canadian world junior trials this past weekend (July 2-4) at the University of Moncton.
Trnkus of Oakville, Ont., along with University of Toronto Track Club (UTTC) members Daniel Chan and Andrew Wells are among 59 athletes from across Canada that will converge on Moncton, July 19-25, to take on the world’s best.
A second-year commerce student, Trnkus placed fourth in the men’s 400m in a time of 48.23. Wells was first in the men’s discus with a throw of 53.54m, while Chan placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.14.
Fellow second-year Varsity Blue Alana Stewart (Etobicoke, Ont.) also posted an impressive fifth-place finish in the women’s triple jump (11.38m).
Other top results at the world junior trials include Varsity Blues recruit Colleen Hennessey’s fifth-place finish in the 1500m (4:36.44) and 10th place finish in the 3000m (10:14.31). Likewise, incoming Varsity Blue Rachel Jewett placed eighth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.34.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of Jewett, Shannon Kennedy, Mikhaila Loader and Samantha Hill also boasted a bronze medal with a time of 4:06.21.
