After the second day of two-a-days the Blues football squad is looking very strong. New systems have been introduced; new players have found a home and returning players are ready to take the lead and change everyone’s opinion about Varsity Blues football.
Both performance testing and the nerves about entering a new training camp are behind us. Saturday was our first official day of camp; it displayed a lot of good signs from all positions and it let our coaches know where our players are at - whether it be how well first-year players can adjust to a new system or how hard returning players have been training this past off-season. First days of camp are usually lighter as we have to wait for all players to finished their concussion testing before we can get into it; the second day however was much different.
Today we strapped on full equipment and got to let out some anger on each other during our first hitting drills. After a long offseason and the tough battle for starting positions, all of our players had something to prove.
First-year players had their metal tested briefly for the first time today - I am sure a lot of the guys are a little banged up but this is only the beginning. There is much more to endure and much tougher days that we will have to overcome during both this week and the remainder of our season.
Both sides of the ball looked very good today. Defence was hitting hard and is adjusting well to their new defensive system. Offence brought their A-game today during hitting drills and made sure to let the defence know there is going to be a new mentality for them this season.
At this time I want to give a special shout out to Broc Elliott, he went down today with an injury today and myself and the rest of the Blues hope he is doing well. He is an excellent player and the team, especially our defence, hopes he bounces back quickly.
It’s going to be a long, challenging week. It is important to take training camp one day at a time, anything done before today doesn’t matter anymore, it’s time to look to tomorrow, Day 3, and get ready for whatever coach throws at us.
