BLUES FALL TO UOIT, TO FACE GUELPH IN QUARTER-FINAL

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team closed out the 2010-11 regular season with their second consecutive 2-1 shootout loss, this time to the UOIT Ridgebacks, on Sunday afternoon at Campus Ice Centre.

The Blues finish the season with a 14-11-2 record in sixth place in the OUA standings and will prepare for a sudden death quarter-final versus the third-place Guelph Gryphons next Sunday in Guelph.

The game marks UOIT’s first win over U of T since joining the OUA in the 2007-08 season.

After a scoreless first period, second-year forward Brittany Kirby opened the scoring on a penalty shot after being hauled down on a breakaway attempt. The Vancouver native skated in and used her signature deke to beat UOIT goaltender Jessica Larabie to give the Blues a 1-0 lead heading into the third period.

UOIT’s Kayla Jerdine evened the score on a powerplay with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. Overtime would solve nothing as the game headed into a shootout.

Ridgebacks forward Sarah Worthington scored the lone goal in the shootout to secure the 2-1 victory.
