WOMEN 3RD, MEN 4TH AT CIS SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Varsity Blues women’s swimming team placed third, while the men were fourth as the 2011 CIS championships came to a close on Saturday night in Calgary.

The Blues earned three more medals on Day 3 of competition, to bring the grand total to 13.

Toronto’s women finished with a combined team score of 341 points, behind the host Calgary, Dinos (778.5) and UBC Thunderbirds (648.5). The Blues men were fourth with 363 total points, narrowly following to the third-place Laval Rouge-et-Or (397). The Dinos completed the sweep (543.5), with UBC finishing second with 493 points.

Oakville, Ont., native Zack Chetrat earned his fourth medal of the meet, finishing third in the men’s 1500-metre with a time of 15:39.09. Sophomore Zach Summerhayes reached the national podium for the first time in his career, also earning the bronze medal in the men’s 200 individual medley (IM) in a time of 2:02.49.

Veteran distance swimmer Poppy Ruksys rounded out the podium finishes, with a bronze medal in the women’s 800-metre freestyle (8:54.84).

Other top results on Day 3 included veteran Mel Davis in the 800-metre, narrowly missing a medal in the final race of her career to earn her highest placing ever on the national stage.  UBC transfer Molly Grove also had a stunning turnaround with her fifth-place finish in the 800-metre.
