BLEED BLUE AT VARSITY CENTRE THIS SATURDAY

After opening the season with two games on the road, the Varsity Blues football team heads home this weekend for an action-packed home opener versus the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, September 17 at Varsity Centre.

The game will be televised nationally as part of theScore’s University Rush series.  Advance tickets are on sale: click here or call 416-946-3811.

The Blues are out for revenge after narrowly falling to the Gryphons, 15-13, on a last-second field goal in their 2010 season opener and will look for their first win over Guelph since 1995.  Guelph holds a 20-15-1 head-to-head record over Toronto since their first meeting in 1976.

Both Toronto and Guelph coming off their first wins of the season after dropping their respective season openers.   The Blues earned their fourth consecutive Argo Cup in the 42nd annual Red & Blue Bowl versus York last Saturday, while the Gryphons defeated the Waterloo Warriors in a lopsided 65-13 affair.

“I’m glad we got our first win under our belt,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “But we’re looking forward and moving onward and upward – what better place to start than at home.”

Alex Pierzchalski of London, Ont., is coming off a career-high performance at York.  The second-year Blues receiver registered 127 yards on nine catches and played an integral role in setting up Toronto’s game-winning field goal.

Veteran quarterback Andrew Gillis will also look to build upon his performance on Saturday.  The Toronto native was 19-of-39 for 268 yards and will go head-to-head with a hot Gryhons quarterback, Chris Rossetti.

A native of Mississauga, Ont., Rossetti completed 11-of-16 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns in Guelph’s victory on Saturday.  He currently ranks sixth, two spots behind Gillis (451), on the OUA leader board with 442 passing yards over two games.

Saturday is also OUA Football Day in Toronto at Varsity Centre. Be sure to come out to the game and join our special guests from the Toronto Argonauts, the Royal Ontario Museum and the U of T Bookstore for some great prizing, contests and fun! Click here for more details.
