The Varsity Blues men’s soccer team advanced to the OUA quarter-finals with a 1-0 (4-3 PK) win over the Nipissing Lakers on Wednesday night (Oct. 24) at Varsity Centre.
With the first-round win, the Blues will travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the top-seeded Queen’s Gaels this Sunday, October 28 at 3:15 p.m.
After a scoreless 120 minutes of action, which saw Toronto outshoot Nipissing 11-2, the game headed into best-of-five penalty kicks.
Team captain Darragh McGee (Donegal, Ireland) notched Toronto’s first goal in PK’s, with Nipissing’s Graham Dufort missing the net high to give the Blues an early advantage.
U of T’s Ezequiel Lubocki, Ryan Sciacchitano and Killian Elkinson also scored to put the Blues up 4-3.
Fourth-year Lakers veteran Scotty Hoogcamp (Trenton, Ont.) stepped up to keep the visiting team alive, but Blues rookie goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart came up with the stop to seal the win.
Trent goalkeeper Andrew Richard (St. Catharines, Ont.) made 11 saves in the loss.
