BLUES, MUSTANGS BATTLE IN DUAL MEET ACTION

The Varsity Blues men’s and women’s swimming team split a dual meet with the Western Mustangs on Saturday, December 1 in London, Ont.

Toronto’s men defeated the Mustangs 83-64, while the Blues women were handed their first loss of the season, falling 80-69 to the OUA defending champions. Overall, U of T topped Western 152-144.

“Being ranked number one is a good step as our goal is to win the national team title,” said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald.

“It’s been a long haul with four major meets in 14 days,” added assistant coach Linda Kiefer. “With exams around the corner and the rough schedule, we did a great job to post the win.”

Zach Summerhayes won both the 200 backstroke and butterfly, while Mitch MacLean took the 400 individual medley race. Kent Kikot (Oakville, Ont.) swan his best in-season 100 freestyle to capture gold, while also meeting CIS standard time.

Vanessa Treasure once again led Toronto’s women. Treasure won the 100 and 200 breast stroke, as well as the 400 IM. Margot Cunningham, Bridget Coley and Andrea Jurenovskis also picked up single wins.
