Recent Varsity Blues football graduate Willie Sharpe is overseas and getting ready for a season with the Marburg Mercenaries in the German Football League.
The Renfrew, Ont., native and industrial engineering graduate arrived in Frankfurt last Thursday. A team co-captain, Sharpe totalled 119 tackles over 39 games and helped U of T to the No. 2 ranked defence in the province this past season. He participated in the 2010 CIS East-West Bowl and is a two-time CIS academic all-Canadian.
Sharpe epitomized what it means to be a student-athlete during his five-year career with the Blues. He was nominated for U of T’s George M. Biggs Trophy this past season, awarded to the graduating male student-athlete who has contributed most to university athletics from the standpoint of leadership, sportsmanship and performance.
He played three different positions during his CIS career, is a three-time recipient of the Blues football award of merit and volunteered at U of T’s 4
th Quarter camp.
The Mercenaries open the 2012 season with a home game against the Munich Cowboys in Georg-Gassmann Stadium Sunday, May 13 at 4 p.m. local time.
