Fourth-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan is coming off a breakout season, posting 20 solo tackles and earning an invitation to last season’s East West Bowl. Kevin gives fans an inside scoop on the 2012 Varsity Blues football season in ‘Kevin’s Critique’.
What a way to start the season! We ignored all this talk of Laurier’s new transfer quarterback from the NCAA and how this year was going to be a rebuilding year for the Blues, and get the job done.
A good football team is able to be strong offensively, defensively and on special teams. Last night, all three helped the team win. The offence was able to capitalize when in the redzone and controlled the game by having long drives that took time off the clock. Defensively, the opposing quarterback was scrambling for his life the majority of the game due to the pressure put on by the D line and linebackers. Even when he did have time to throw the coverage by the defensive backs was solid and no big plays were allowed. Finally and most importantly, special teams made BIG plays. Due to long punts and kickoffs, great returns and a couple of blocked kicks, special teams helped us win the battle of field position and allow for offence and defence to succeed.
Even after a big win like this, many people still don’t believe that the Blues are for real. Many attribute the win to Laurier being worse than in past years instead of us being better. That’s why we are already moving on from this game and now focusing on Western. It’s back to the practice field and film room to prepare and show that this game was not a fluke.
P.S. Thanks to all those who came to the game! It’s awesome seeing Varsity packed with screaming Blues fans!
