Box Score Fifth-year guard Alex Hill notched a career-high 35 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team to a 93-85 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday night in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Toronto native shot 9-for-16 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, and drained 14-of-15 from the line. He also added seven boards and five assists in the win.
Second-year forwards Manny Sahota (Brampton, Ont.) and Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) added 14 and 19 points, respectively, with Johnson notching a game-high nine rebounds on the night. First-year guard Nicholas Burke of Hamilton, Ont., had 11 points.
The Blues opened the game on a 13-2 run, but the Badgers battled back with a 10-6 streak of their own. Toronto led 19-12 after the first 10 minutes of action.
Brock brought the game within three midway through the second quarter, but eight points from Hill helped widen the gap as U of T took a 40-28 lead at halftime.
Toronto got off to a 11-3 run to start the second half and led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter. The Badgers narrowed the gap slightly as the Blues held a 67-54 advantage heading into the final frame.
Brock held on and attempted to inch their way back into the game, but it was too little, too late as U of T secured their first win of the season.
Tshing Kasamba and Brandon John led the Badgers with 19 points apiece, while Dani Elgadi added 16 in the loss.
The win marks the first for head coach John Campbell. The Varsity Blues will look for their second win as Campbell squares off against his father, Peter, head coach of the Laurier Golden Hawks next Friday, November 8 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
