SWIMMERS OPEN SEASON WITH TRI-MEET WIN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming team opened the season with victories at a tri-meet versus the Waterloo Warriors and Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, September 29 in Waterloo, Ont.

The OUA and CIS defending champion men topped the Warriors 69-23 and the Gryphons 73-19, while the Blues women defeated Waterloo 71-21 and Guelph 67-25.

Leading Toronto's women was Paige Schultz, who won both the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke in pool-record times.

"We are very happy to have Paige back with the team after a two year hiatus," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "She won two medals at the FISU Games this summer and is definitely a great addition to the team."

The Blues men were led by NCAA transfer Chris Manning. The Brantford, Ont., native won the 50 breaststroke and butterfly in pool-record times.

"Chris is a bona fide top sprinter and his decision to leave the NCAA and come to U of T will undoubtedly prove to be a good one," added MacDonald.
