Box Score Fifth-year guard Alex Hill notched 22 points and became U of T's all-time career scoring leader as the Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 75-59 to the No. 4 Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Hill went 7-for-20 from the floor and 6-for7 from the free throw line, while adding five rebounds and two steals. The Toronto native needed 15 points to pass Dave West's record (1,269, 1960-61, 62-65) and hit that mark in the final minutes of the third quarter on a free throw. Â The American Studies major has 13 regular season games remaining in his five-year career.
"It means a lot," said Hill. "I'm lucky to have teammates who let me shoot about 20 times a game but it's honestly an honour to set that record and hopefully it won't last for another 50 years."
With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-7 and remain in eighth place in the East, while the Rams improve to 9-1 and move into a tie for first place with the CIS top-ranked Carleton Ravens.
Second-year forward Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) added 10 points and four rebounds, while Nicholas Burke, Manny Sahota and Dylan Churchill each had five points in the loss.
Ryerson opened the game on a 14-4 run, but Johnson led a Blues 6-0 rally and to cut the deficit to four (14-10) at the end of the first quarter. The Rams extended their lead early, but Toronto kept pace in the second frame and only trailed 33-26 at halftime.
The Rams outscored Toronto 21-17 in the third and 21-16 in the fourth to secure the 16-point victory.
Jahmal Jones led all players with 24 points, while Kadeem Green had 14 and Aaron Best added 11 in the win.
The Varsity Blues are back in action on Tuesday night (Jan. 7) as they host the Waterloo Warriors (0-9) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
