BLUES TOP HAWKS, LIONS IN TRI-MEET ACTION

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming teams came out on top as they hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks and York Lions in tri-meet action on Saturday evening (Oct. 25) at Varsity Pool.

The two-time CIS defending champion Blues men defeated the Lions 88-42, while also topping the Hawks 88-48. Toronto's women, who are defending OUA champions, defeated York 88-25 and Laurier 88-46.  Toronto broke 20 meet records on the day.

"The main reason there were so many meet records is that this is only the second year we have ever run this particular meet with York and Laurier, so the history is not that rich yet," said head coach Byron MacDonald. "The good news is that we are way faster at this year's meet, thus 90% of the events had new records. There is no doubt that we are heading in the right direction to our goals of repeating as conference champions and national prominence."

In women's action, Vanessa Treasure, Melanie McDonald and Paige Schultz each won two races. Treasure won the 200 butterfly and 100 IM, while McDonald took the top spot in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Schultz finished first in the 25 and 100-metre freestyle events.

"I was particularly pleased with rookies Melanie Mcdonald and Lisa vanBreugel, who had subpar swims last weekend but have responded with much better efforts this weekend," said MacDonald. "Both have solidified themselves as national threats."

On the men's side, Hochan Ryu was the only double winner, picking up gold in the 200 butterfly and 100 IM.

"Hochan is a very talented athlete and the times he is registering are showing that he should be in the national picture going forward," added MacDonald.
