The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's swimming team upset the No. 1 Carabins in dual-meet action on Friday night (Oct. 31) in Montreal.
Â
Toronto's women defeated Montreal 91-78, while the Blues men topped the Carabins 117-50.
Â
Veterans Bridget Coley and Vanessa Treasure, as well as rookie Kylie Masse all earned two wins on the night. Coley came first in the 400 and 800 freestyle events, while Treasure was the top swimmer in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke. Masse won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
Â
Paige Schultz also earned the win in the 200 freestyle race.
Â
One of the top moments of the night was when Coley and rookie Lisa van Breugel finished 1-2 in the 400 freestyle to beat CIS all-Canadian Gabrielle Soucisse.
Â
"Lisa has really blossomed in her first year," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "She finished her last two years of high school overseas so she kind of dropped out of sight. I felt she could be a diamond in the rough and it's coming true even faster than I could have predicted."
Â
The Coley/van Breugel duo did it again halfway through the meet. After the score had gone back-and-forth, Coley and van Breugel again finished 1-2 in the 800 freestyle.
Â
Toronto's 4x50 freestyle relay team of Schultz, Victoria Radounski, Jen Tapley and Margot Cunningham, as well as the 4x100 freestyle relay team of Tapley, Radounski, Cunningham and van Breugel also earned first-place finishes in the win.
Â
Toronto's men, who are currently ranked No. 1 in the CIS, easily took the meet over Montreal.
Â
"The standout of the meet was certainly rookie Oliver Straszynski," said MacDonald. "It was a tough sled of events, but Ollie won the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles and joined his teammates for the 4x100 relay too."
Â
Full ResultsEli wall won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while Edward Liu was tops in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Dan Kuiack also won two races in the 100 and 200 backstroke.Â
