The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team defeated the Western Mustangs 76-71 on Day 1 of the U of T Holiday Invitational, December 28, at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

Third-year guard Rahshida Atkinson notched a game-high 18 points, while adding five boards, two assists and two steals on the day.

Four other Blues hit double digits in the win, including a 13-point performance from Emily Piccini and 10 points apiece from Diedre Edwards and rookies Keyira Parkes and Mahal De La Durantay.

Alanna Garner added nine points, while fellow co-captain Abena Addo had a team-high seven boards in the win.

Toronto got out to a great start, leading 16-8 after the first 10 minutes of action and held a 34-27 lead heading into halftime. The Blues extended their lead to 13 (60-47) heading into the fourth quarter and held off a late surge from the Mustangs to secure the win.

The Blues continue tournament action tomorrow when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks at 3 p.m.
