The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team hosted their annual Fred Foot Memorial Meet, January 15-16, at the Athletic Centre Field House.
Fifth-year veteran and reigning CIS pentathlon champion James Turner led the Blues, finishing first overall and meeting the CIS standard in the heptathlon with 5430 points. Turner finished first in the 60m (7.07), long jump (7.09m), shot put (14.07m), 60m hurdles (8.53), pole vault (4.40m), 1000m (2:48.96) and tied for first in the high jump (1.82m) en route to victory. His brother, Rostam Turner, placed second overall with 3526 points.
Toronto's throwing contingent started Saturday off with a bang as Ekua Cudjoe won the women's weight throw, meeting the CIS standard with a throw of 17.09m, while also placing first in the shot put with a throw of 12.45m.
Similarly, Ezana Debalkew won the men's shot put with a throw of 13.35m and placed second in the weight throw (15.47m). Darnell Girard was second in the shot put, throwing 13.16m.
James Elson (1.95m) and Ahmad Nizamani (1.90m) placed 1-2 in the men's high jump, while Ben Daly-Grafstein was second in the men's long jump (6.11m). Elson also finished second in the triple jump (12.98m).
Brittany Vernon (5.16m) and Melissa Hazen (5.12m) finished 1-2 in the women's long jump, while Carolyn Adams (1.65m) and Brenna Hamel (1.55m) were 2-3 in the high jump. Adams also finished second in the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.82 seconds.
Laura Amoi (10.86m) and Vernon (10.76m) placed 1-2 in the triple jump, while Brittany Salmon was third in the women's pole vault with a height of 3.60m.
