The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team heads to Kingston, Ont., on Wednesday night (Mar. 2) to take on the Queen's Gaels in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.
A Head-to-Head LookThe Varsity Blues ended the regular season with a 5-14 record finishing in third place in the OUA East.
The Gaels finished just one position ahead in second place with an 11-8 regular season record.
The Blues split their season series with Queen's, knocking off the Gaels at the Goldring Centre in a stunning 85-84 upset on Jan. 15, before dropping their regular season finale 81-73 this past weekend in Kingston.
This will be the first post-season meeting between the two squads since 2008-09, when the Varsity Blues defeated the Gaels 63-48 in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
A Look at the BluesToronto enters the postseason with one of the top offensive threats in the OUA in forward Devin Johnson. The fourth-year standout finished the regular season second in the provincial scoring race averaging 22.4 points per game while also tied for sixth in the OUA in rebounds per game with 7.5.
U of T will also look to lean on the strong late-season performances of first-year sensation Devon Williams and rookie centre Miro Jaksic. Williams has developed into a serious threat from behind the arc, averaging 6.5 three-point attempts per game.
Meanwhile, the big man Jaksic has sky-rocketed up the Varsity Blues stat board, establishing a strong presence in the paint while scoring 11 in two of the teams last three games.
A Look at the GaelsFourth-year guard Sukhpreet Singh finished the regular season just behind Johnson in the OUA scoring race, averaging 22.3 points per game. However, with his exceptional attacking style on the offensive end Singh has found himself in turnover trouble sitting fourth in the OUA in total turnovers (74).
Singh's quick drive will be supported by the inside game of Queen's forward Tanner Graham and the outside shooting of guard Andrew Mavety. In his second season, Graham has vaulted into the OUA top 10 as a rebounder (7.3/game) to go along with a 13.4 points per game average.
Mavety finished with the best three-point percentage in the entire province, hitting over 50 per cent of his shots from distance this season.
